policy work
A significant part of our work since 2010 has been to spotlight some of the barriers to sustainable urban farming. We are proud to note that our work has directly led to the following legislation:
2011 – Update to San Francisco’s Zoning Code
An update to SF Planning code that recognizes urban agriculture as a valid use within all zones, reducing the bureaucratic hoops an urban farmer must go through to get permitting. (See video of speeches and the signing of the legislation at Little City Gardens!)
2014 – Urban Agriculture Incentive Zone Act (AB551)
Statewide legislation that offers an adjusted property tax rate to vacant landowners who make property available to an urban farmer for a minimum of 5 years.
